Developmental Psychology
Introduction
We come into world as a
baby then become a child, an adolescent, and a finally matured adult. This
amazing development proceeds along several parallel tracks. One is Physical
Development and involves the growth of bones muscles, nervous
system and bodily organs.
At the same time Mental
Growth is also continued shown by an increasing ability to solve
problems and deals with ideas.
Social
Development is also remain continued
, as we become batter able to deal with others and adjust according to the
demand of society.
So,
Developmental
Psychology is the Branch of
psychology deals with the course and causes of physical, social, emotional,
moral and intellectual development over a person’s life span.
Maturation
Maturation is closely
related to the biological aspect of human being which emphasize the
psychological make-up and functioning of individual.
Growth
Growth may be described
as qualitatively and quantitatively. Growth is qualitative because child
experiences an increase in size and qualitative because child’s system is
changed slowly in structure and function.
Principles of Development
Developmental rate is
different in different people. For example children of same age look different
in height and health.
Individual Development
proceeds in order. Like in infancy children sit before than walking, babble
before they talk.
Individual develop
gradually. Changes come slowly and take time.

Preyer
He introduced systematic
observational method to study the child called biography.
Charles Darwin
His diary is a pioneer
biography which was about his infant son.
Stanely Hall
He theorized that the
normal growth or stage of evolution. He formulated questionair and asked from
children and teacher. By this method he collected lot of facts about childhood
experiences and their problems.
Watson:
He applied conditioning
techniques of Pavlov to new born infants. He studied the emotional responses in
infants.
Freud
Freud suggested that
developmental is the product of both internal urges and external conditions.
Jean Piaget
Piaget insisted that the
influence of nature and nurture are inseparable and interactive. As children
manipulate and explore object around them, they are guided by the mental images
of the object and of their own actions.
All these psychologists
worked a lot in the field of Developmental Psychology.
